Is there a program similar to TextPad for Linux? I like being able to compile and execute java right from the editor.

Lots of them. Emacs can do this. Most Java IDEs work on Linux (Eclipse, IntelliJ IDEA).

There's a plugin for Emacs, as a matter of fact that's designed to facilitate Java development and debugging: JDE
I use it on machines that are too slow to run the fancy IDEs like Eclipse.
 
Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
