+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
hi,

i have finally decided to learn linux. so i getting a new computer for it(only linux on it). the question is which one??Red hat? my future plan is to host my own site running my own webserver, (which is a long away from realization).

i need a linux which is realible, versatile and unhackable. so which one and kindly suggest a book(s) that will tell me everything there is to know, like programming regestering, changing code, etc. learning is not a prob but i dont want to waste my time.

Also a linux which would let me run my windows application. for eg, say i buy a Flash Mx Cd for windows, can i run it on this linux machine. is this possible on redhat???

There are as many answers to that question as there are linux distributions. The most popular are Mandrake, Fedora (what used to be called Red Hat), Knoppix, Debian, and SUSE. They are all good general-purpose distros. Visit Distrowatch, and the distro's home pages and look for the features you need.

Linux, as with all operating systems, is only as unhackable as the administrator maintaining it. I don't think any one book covers everything you need to know. Learning Debian GNU/Linux is a little dated, but a good starting point as the various distros use the same utilities. Your best bet is familiarize yourself with the Linux Documentation Project for general information and frequent the user forums and mailing lists for whatever distribution you choose.

Linux relies on Wine for windows compatability. There is a list of applications on the Wine website.
