Hope this is in the right forum...

This is an age old Q that i seem to be stuck on. Its coming to the time where i really need to dig into one of these editors for school purposes instead of relying on pico or textpad.

For a beginner with MINIMAL time using Emacs, which would you recommend I use first and why?

Thanks for any input.

the only editor guaranteed to be on every Unix machine is vi.

Vi is adequate and will not hold you back.

Emacs is much more powerful, but it's hard to maintain proficiency with emacs unless you use it full time. For school purposes, it might be overkill.
