1. Fedora is an open community effort, but it's built on the Red Hat architecture (as is Mandrake). Although many of the people involved in Fedora are Red hat employees - and, AFAIK even doing their work on Red Hat's payroll, you don't have to work for Red hat to contribute. More importantly, you can't buy Fedora from Red Hat, nor can you call Red Hat for Fedora support.
2. It's a little mature for "testing". I run my video recorder using Fedora Core 1, but it's now considered obsolete. Core 2 is the active release, with Core 3 expected to go live within a month or so.
3. "Best" is a grossly-abused concept. Fedora is one of the best solutions for what
I do, but YMMV. Some prefer Debian, Gentoo or even Slackware. There is no "best" Linux any more than Linux is the "best" solution for all computing needs. yes, you're touched a sore nerve. I've endured too many kiddie who haven't seen jack but get all in your face about "best".
