I started installing Gentoo on a spare PC at work today. I left with it boostrapping. Tomorrow it should spend the day installing the base system. It is quite a process. But I am looking forward to the very optimized end result.

So who else is using Gentoo and what are you primarily using it for?

I've been running a Gentoo box as my 24/7 computer for most of this year. I've got DSL and a static ip and it sits on the other side of the firewall with HTTP and SSH available to the outside world. I gave shell accounts to a couple of friends and we use it as a file exchange. It's also pretty useful for backing up work-related stuff so I always have an up-to-date "portfolio". Right now I'm logged in remotely and recompiling the kernel.
At home, since it's always on and always connected, It's the e-mail checking, web browsing, mp3 playing, video watching box.

A number of people locally swear by Gentoo - they're just not JavaRanchers.
