In my experience, the best way to learn how to do something new is to try it out. In this case, you should probably start with learning basic command-line syntax. Tools like ls, cd, rm, and more come in handy on many occassions. If you need to learn about a particular tool, man is your friend. For example, you can type

man ls

to find out all the command line arguments you can pass to the ls command. Some tools are also provide info documentation, so you can do

info ls

instead. If the tool doesn't provide docs specific for info, this will load the manpage instead.

Learning Linux is such a broad topic, so I would suggest that you come back here with more questions as you encounter problems along the way. Of course, I'm sure you thought of that already

Good luck!

well, you don't have to mount all newly installed hardware - just storage devices, like disks. exactly what you must do will vary with your distribution, as there are several different ways they can be set up to help make this easier, but usually you can just do:

or

and it should do the right thing. if not, consult the documentation for your distribution.

oh yes, and i forgot to add: once you get the "mount" command working, don't forget to "umount" the disk before ejecting it.

If you installed from a CD, it will say on the CD itself, especially if it is a commercial version. If your friend burned the CD, perhaps he/she was kind enough to write the distro name on it.

You can also look at the login prompt. It typically indicates which distro (that's short for distribution) you are using.

Finally, in most distributions, the uname program will give you the particular information you are looking for. It may require some command-line switches to get the exact info you want, so use "man uname" to find out for sure.
