Hi
Iam installing java in redhat linux box, I have downloaded j2sdk-1_4_2_09-linux-i586.bin and placed it in the root folder. Iam going through following documentation http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/install-linux.html#self-extracting

but it is failing at second step only the error is
-bash: chmod+xj2sdk-1_4_2_09-linux-i586.bin: command not found

How can I solve above please suggest a solution

thanks in advance

You appear to have omitted the spaces in between the three words of your command; it should be

chmod   +x    j2sdk-1_4_2_09-linux-i586.bin

did it install under /opt/java?

you might also want to add a profile script (so that when you log in, java is automatically in the path)..

create a file in

/etc/profile.d called "jdk.sh"

the jdk.sh contains the following
#!/bin/bash
JAVA_HOME=/opt/java
if [ -d $JAVA_HOME ] ; then
PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin
export PATH JAVA_HOME
fi

make sure the /etc/profile.d/jdk.sh is world executable (chmod 755).
