If I want the new files to be

rw-r-----

then what's the umask value ?

rw-rw----

The values are grouped for
user/group/others

I think you are talking about the chmod value, not the umask value.

Complement of the permissions you want. So it will be 0137 here, and ...

... 0117 here.

The values I gave are in octal (hence the 0 prefix).
