One of the beauties of this spot o' paradise, as far as I can tell, is the lack of flamage (even with the wood paneling on the walls and all). I saw a few matches being lit, followed by a flicker of a Bic(tm) and later the click-flash-burn of a Zippo(tm) after that. Anyone want to comment on the history of flaming at the ranch, and what is usually done to those unfortunate hands that purchase the full-blown flamethrower at the local surplus store? Feel free to bypass this topic if commentary is unnecessary, as I believe most people here understand the importance of respect in the forums. Just thought I'd bring up the topic as a little lure on a hook... OP
I haven't seen any real flame wars. There have been some tempers shown here and there but the moderators do a good job of putting out the fire very quickly. Normally, an overly aggressive poster may be privately e-mailed or in serious cases his post may be edited or even deleted. Of course, Meaningless Drivel is a little different. After all, the entire forum is meaningless since it has nothing to do with Java so we do tend to let things get a little bit hot there.
Even in drivel it's pretty tame. It's really nice to discuss some of the hot topics that we do without it getting personal. It makes it really enjoyable to read the opinions of others on the big issues of the day. Matthew Phillips

Interesting that an active thread with more than 12 posts has the 'flaming' icon on it... I wonder if that was planned to indicate possible conflagration by the participants? OP
I think what makes this board flame proof is two things. 1. A lot of us have been here for over a year now. 2. The fact that nearly everyone uses their real name. I for one include my e-mail address on the posts so everyone can talk to me directly (off-line). Surprisingly I have not received 1 piece of threatening e-mail or virus attacks from any Java Ranch users. People do send me resume's to review - or sometimes ask me about the USA job market at times. This is perfectly fine. Unfortunately, I am lazy and it takes me a while to get back to folks. ------ The two big areas that get hot now and then are the: "C# vs Java" and "Java is Dead" articles. A big area of disagreement is college vs. non-college - and how it affects your job search. But we try to keep it on a professional level. And throw in some humor now and then. ----- John Coxey (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Did someone say Flame War??? This is the only board ive ever been part of that i havent been involved in a flame war at least once a week. It always happens for one reason or another. But sometimes flame wars are fun to let some steam off. Any takers?
