30k/pa are you kidding or provoking intentionally?
What's minimum wages act in India for a full time position? I am sure pizza delivery boy must be making lot more than that. Or maybe a salesman in a bookstore will make more than that.

Hi all,

We are based in New York City and have been awarded a $350K contract for a project. We hope to outsource this to India for the above stated salary - we want to keep costs to a minimum for maximum returns, just like other companies. The salary is actually a good living wage in India - we have had successful projects done in India before.

The contract is for 12-months. We cannot offer any onsite opportunities - although we are happy for people to work with us in our NY offices if they wish - at a cost to them. The salary will remain the same, since this is a fixed contract.

Good luck.

Hi Nandu !

Cheap company recruiting for cheap programmers. Any takers?

Of course your despise reflex is legitimous, we should all have the same, but this topic is so stupid in the form I strongly suspect a troll.

Either the original publisher is a real morron (simply consider ultra-provocative topic title "Cheap Indian Programmers Wanted", which Indian could sensibly not take it as a personnal offense) because he really honestly needs them but for a good reason he didn't state, so everyone took the "cheap labour" option as granted by default.

Or this is simply a troll, someone who wants to emphasize the "cheap labour" theory which states single worth criteria for selecting Indians is "cheapness". We already saw such obvious abuses with a $35,000 a year at New York proposed to a fellow Indian, which is of course far too low to live in this area. We certainly will see many more such trolls which will emphasize the fierce raging debate about H1B need where clearly people don't know whether it is still valuable as such, least of them being US gov of course.

IMHO I suspect this is no troll because its form is obviously too provocative, simply an offer from a very naive and unexperienced HR staff or so said, who stated a hiring need's raw criterias without wondering about any adaptation to make it look good. This recalls me the internet bubble area in US where staff was so scarce than one was even short of recruiters, but applied to India this time. It would mean than jobs in India are so booming than totally unexperienced recruiters have to be used, which is good for India.

Best regards.

In all probability, he is posting here just to annoy/provoke people. Anybody with knowledge of Indian market would know that even a fresher is paid at least 120,000 INR per annum. Even a peon in offices is paid more than 30k p.a.

What do you think Indians are? Cheap slaves???

Hi all !

We are based in New York City and have been awarded a $350K contract for a project. We hope to outsource this to India for the above stated salary - we want to keep costs to a minimum for maximum returns, just like other companies. The salary is actually a good living wage in India - we have had successful projects done in India before.

The only question is about "salary is actually a good living wage in India" as they state or not. If it is true it must be a job offer among others. If not, as all former Indian ranchers stated (up to date Indian relevant standard salary should be 10 times higher), this is probably the most classical reference of bodyshoppers I have ever seen.

But I must admit they are totally frank : "cheap Indian programmers wanted", "keep costs to a minimum for maximum returns, just like other companies". This one is a real reference for wondering which limits should ethically exist for offshoring business.

The contract is for 12-months. We cannot offer any onsite opportunities - although we are happy for people to work with us in our NY offices if they wish - at a cost to them. The salary will remain the same, since this is a fixed contract.

Probably they added this one so as to look more open with some "compensations", but they should have voided it : 30,000 Indian roupies a year is about (1 USD is about 0.0228 INR, or divide dollars by 44) $680 USD a year which is not only ridiculous in New York area ($50,000 USD a year seems a bare minimum to survive there from previous posts) but even anywhere in US as it is even far lower than mandatory minimum legal US wage, some $20,000 USD a year if I remember well. This "offer" is certainly totally illegal as such on US soil.

Anyway limited position (only 12 mounths then fired), salary about 10 times lower than present up to date Indian wages, cynical provocative comments (sweat a max for almost nothing so as to ensure maximum bucks for us)... I don't care wondering whether this outsourcing project has any chance to succeed or not, it is doomed by advance. The only interesting thing I would like to know is whether they could find anyone for this offer. If they could, our Indian fellows should worry for it would strongly suggest that "cheap Indian" theory is a reality which works.

Best regards.

Ok people. I think we get the idea. If you want to continue discussing average wages and cost of living, I suggest you do so in the Job Discussions forum. I am closing this thread to avoid anymore discussion here, but I am leaving is visible so that others who *might* be interested can contact the recruiter.

Thanks.
