Mac shell won't print Accented Unicode characters

I am writing a program which prints some accented characters.
In Windows in solve dit by using code page(CP437) for encoding. e.g.

javac -encoding cp437 testF.java

java -Dfile.encoding=cp437 testF

Please let me know what encoding should I run my program on Mac shell. (or in other words 'chcp'(dos command line) equivalent on mac shell )

Which shell? bash? tcsh?

I don't know the answer, but anyone who does will probably need to know which shell you are running.
