OK, this has no value to anyone, but I was just too excited and had to say something. I got the new G5 iMac 20" yesterday (I have been using a G4 Powerbook, 15" titanium). I just could not beat the price, and what I really wanted was a larger display. So now I have a 20", a G5, 1.8 GHz, 160 GB hard drive!! I has 3 USB ports, 2 FireWire, audio *in* as well as optical audio out, so you can watch DVDs in surround sound.

The prices on these new iMacs are so good. Obviously it has limitations (like you can't do "extended desktop", but can only MIRROR to another monitor), but compared to what I was using, and for $1,000 LESS than what I was planning to pay to get a 17" Aluminum Powerbook. Of course if I had unlimited funds, I'd add a dual G5 Power Mac to the family, but...

So now I have the task of transferring everything over, and getting Java Tiger to run as well...

It really DOES look just like a giant iPod.

Now Bert is looking at my iMac lustfully, and with serious pixel envy. He has the same 15" Powerbook that I had. Meanwhile, my daughter will get my Powerbook, so SHE's thrilled (she has an old G3 iBook), although thats a concern for me... the iMac is not portable, so I still need to make sure that I have a working laptop for working trips, which we take A LOT.

I really agonized over that part of the decision--getting a laptop vs. a desktop machine--but the price of the iMac was so much cheaper, and with so many more features than even the 17" Powerbook. And I don't think it would ever make sense to have a 20" laptop, yet I find myself really wanting that 20" display now.

cheers,
Kathy

Excuse me while I turn green...

Nice machine isn't it? A friend of mine has one and it's a beauty to behold.

Of course, I found a very beautiful couch. Definitely. And this tiny ad:
