My poor old powerbook (all 667 mhz of it) has gone thru all manner of hell - I fried its firewire port by somehow jamming a firewire cable in upside-down - so now I have a firewire card in the pcmcia slot. It's traveled around the world a couple of times - crammed into various incarnations of backpacks, satchels, and briefcases and getting x-rayed, scanned and dropped countless times. Now, it's starting to manifest some quirky behaviors (go figure), like sleeping and waking up are erratic, it seems to lose some of its preferences, and the USB ports seem to notice their devices erraticly (?).

So, do you think an O/S reload might help? Anyone have any experience with anything like this?

I have no idea, but do you mind if I borrow your text and turn it into a fill-in-the-blanks?

And don't forget the punchline: "Anyone have any experience with anything like this?"

I've been a born-again Mac enthusiast for over a year now, and I've already had one problem that could not be solved without an OS reinstall. I felt bad about doing it -- it's definitely not something I ever had to do in many years of using Linux. But I got into a situation where the upgrade to QuickTime 7.0.4 broke iMovie, which I use; and the downgrader they supplied back to 7.0.1 fixed iMovie, but then QT playback everywhere else was broken. It was perfectly repeatable. I Googled high and wide, tried every suggestion under the sun, and nothing worked.

I finally did an OS reinstall followed by a full update. Everything worked like a charm, and I didn't lose any data.

That part is good to hear! I've never installed or re-installed an OS, but I'll probably upgrade to Leopard when it comes out.

One fairly credible opinion I heard is that they're not announcing all the new features because some of them tie pretty directly to other new products that will be announced simultaneously. Like perhaps iPhones or wireless iPods...

I'm still praying for a Viao-sized notebook, but I have a feeling my prayers will not be answered

I don't know, but my nave guess is that instead of backing up entire files, it just stores the original and then tracks subsequent changes so the file can be reconstructed for any given date. Does that make sense?

Now this has possibilities...

Remote control takes on a whole new meaning with iChat in Leopard. Thanks to iChat Screen Sharing, you and your buddy can observe and control a single desktop via iChat, making it a cinch to collaborate with colleagues...

Apple support via remote control?

Currently, iChat works with Mac.com, AIM, or Jabber. I very rarely use it, but I have it set up with an AIM account.

I can see the remote control feature requiring both users to have Leopard.
