"Apple Inc. said Thursday it pushed back the release of its new operating system, Leopard, until October from its target date of June."

I'd rather it be late than half-baked. But this is probably annoying to those that were waiting for Leopard to make a new Mac purchase.

Probably also means that Java 6 is not going to see the light of the day until October.

Definitely! And 4 months isn't a long delay.

I would love a new MacBook Pro, but I'm trying to settle down on the hardware purchases. My PowerBook is still less than 2 years old, and I really have no need for an upgrade. So I'm planning on just the OS this year.

With the usual arrogance, Apple has never disclosed to Java developers its official plans about Java 6, but since the latest pre-release dates several months back we have understood that the final release is bound to Leopard. This was already a questionable decision, in any case until yesterday it looked like Leopard was really close so we could live with it.

Releasing Java 6 at October 2007 means TEN MONTHS of delay with respect to Sun release. We are back to the bad habits (Java 5 was released with a huge delay too).

I don't know but sometimes I feel that Apple don't care about Java developers although they are a huge sector of Apple's stuffs.

I think it's understandable that getting on OS version out has a higher priority than getting a Java update out. The subject of Apples lag in Java releases has also been discussed here.
