Where the hell is JDK 1.6 for mac. Has Apple forsaken us? I've heared rumors about leopard and JDK 1.6, but all it says on the official leopard pages is that leopard will be bundled with a 64-bit version of Java. Recent beta versions of leopard still have 1.5.
Will there never be a JDK 1.6 for tiger? If leopard does ship with JDK 1.6 and there no JDK 1.6 for tiger, then my JDK 1.6 applications wouldn't be compatible with tiger. So are we mac java developers stuck with 1.5?

Java 6 does exist as a beta version. You can get it by signing up to the Apple Developer Connection. It works reportedly fine for many people.

I hear an echo from 2005.

When Tiger (the OS) came out, these same concerns were raised with the same fervor: "Where is Java 1.5? It was included with the developer beta versions and was "expected" to be included with OS 10.4. Will Apple ever release Java 1.5? Has Apple abandoned Java? "

The situation is a bit different, though. The beta continued to be available for download, and it worked fine with the released 10.4 version.

I find it hard to see what Apple hopes to gain by this course of action (especially the lack of public communication) that isn't more than offset by the negative PR.
