help in displaying special characters

Hello,
I would like know a method to display special characters like the one generated using combination of keys like ALT + 9, Alt + 8 etc.. in the selection box(in both IE & NS).
The same special characters when displayed directly on HTML page appears correctly and the
problem is only with the selection box.
I also want to know whether the special characters are dependent on browsers while displaying.
