how can i change the text in the browsers statusbar, if it is possible?

I suspect you'll find your answer in the JavaScript forum, so I'm moving this thread there.
Just be careful of that Eric Pascarello. Sure, he'll help you set the text in the status bar, but before you know it, you'll be writing Doom 3D in the status bar...

The method showStatus() in Applet does what you want; so in your applet,
just call

And if you are trying to set it from Javascript, rather than an applet:

Be a good web citizen and be sure to use the status bar for, well status. The status bar contains useful information and usurping it for ads or to be "cute" is kind of rude.
