Hi,

Not a rant this time, but a vexation.

I have noticed this behaviour before, but I thought maybe it was a problem on my end. But now I am convinced there is something rotten in Denmark.

If someone makes a post with the [ quote ] tags, and then edits that post... anything within the [ quote ] tags is no longer there. I could swear I also had a few things outside of [ quote ] tags that also disappeared, but I can't be certain. The most recent post I made that this has happened with is: http://www.javaranch.com/ubb/Forum7/HTML/000638.html

Like I say in my last post, I will have to train myself to use [ code ] tags instead.

I must say though: Cindy Glass doesn't appear to have problems when she quotes JLS.

I haven't noticed this problem - let me do a test:
Sample quote.

Hmmmm... looks the same to me after editing.

Does this problem occur for you whenever you re-edit something with
tags? Or just some times? If we can identify exactly what circumstances lead to this it would help.
Incidentally, in the other thread you comment on the problem of UBB editing out empty lines from code. This is annoying, but you can circumvent it by putting one or more spaces on the line. For some reason this is sufficient to prevent UBB from eating the line.

It happens infrequently, which is why I thought initially it was my problem. The steps to reproduce are probably the exact same from when you did your test 'quote' post.

When i'm watchful and I notice it in time, anything that was in the 'quote' tag is completely gone from the textarea when you click 'edit'. If you back out of the edit by clicking the back button, you can still see the original post with the 'quote' properly displayed, but edit will not grab it.

What has also happened is that in posts that contain a quote , sometimes more than just the quote is munged.

I've also noticed sometimes when people 'reply with quote', that either they do not actually say anything new, or their new reply gets eaten. See here for a recent example: http://www.javaranch.com/ubb/Forum11/HTML/000437.html I've seen this behaviour more than once, and it's always got a 'quote' displayed but no new text.

This could all be in my head, or maybe it's all coincidental that people click 'reply with quote' then don't type anything else. But I don't think so. The truth is out there.

p.s. UBB munges not only blank lines in code tags, but everywhere. I've learned to hit Return-space-Return at the end of my paragraphs. It's starting to spill over to my Word processing and code writing.

UBB is the software we use at the Ranch. It's a abbreviation for Ultimate Bulletin Board.

UBB sucks... but there is a more recent version so maybe that doesn't suck quite as much.

UBB backend processing and customizability might suck, but I really truly love the client side interface. There are other websites that have 'java forums', but I only use this one, and it's mostly because I like the interface.

I used to work with VB and www.searchvb.com uses UBB forums.

It's just really a good experience. Aside from the buggy behaviour.
