How to track download status

Hi All,
I have one application where once user paid an amount, I should allow
him/her to download a software.I have to track download status whether
it is successful.Can any one help me in this regard? Actually I am using
PHP.But my purpose of posting here is to just to get an idea and
to find out whether could it be possible using just HTML/javascript.
Any help is highly appreciated.
