valign in style sheet not working.

I have a style like this
.x {text-align:right; valign:top;}

<table >
<tr> <td class="x"> abcd </td> <td> jkjk <br> opop </td> </tr>
</table>

abcd is right aligned. However it is not top aligned as specified in style.
To make abcd top align, I have to put valign in td tag like this
<tr> <td class="x" valign=�top� > abcd </td> <td > jkjk <br> opop </td> </tr>

Why?

try
vertical-align: top;
