There is an attribute in JSF called "binding" which allows me to link the JSF component to a method which can be used to programmatically define what that attribute is.

Theoretically I can have a bean in session scope which represents the JSF page state. I can use AJAX to communicate state changes in the browser to the server and thus through the current session to the JSF.

Any experience out there with this sort of stuff? Or any known set of tools to manage this in an easier fashion?

It should be pretty straight forward. Get the Context, get the session get the form bean (managed bean) in session. Tell it what ajax told you tell ajax what it told you and let the client know what just happened.
