My site uses an image repeated to form the background for JSPs:
when a page loads on the deployment server- Resin, sometimes the background doesn't load with it, sometimes it does. However I'm not getting this problem on Tomcat- the development server. what could be causing this? And is there a hack?

it seems the problem is more involved than i thought. Actually when the pages fail to load properly, its the whole stylesheet that doesn't load! Could someone pls enlighten me on some reasons why a css would load sometimes and not at other times?
Thank you for replying Bear. The problem is more with firefox- works 80% of the time, but every once in a while the entire css fails. Now with explorer, there's a delay between when the page data loads and when the background image loads, but it does seem to load the css everytime at least.
That actually works out better for you since Firefox has loads of plugins that you can use to help diagnose this.
I'd suggest looking through the firefox site for tools that will help you sniff the requests that the browser is making and the responses that are returned. The browser should be making a separate request for the CSS file (and any other resources such as images) Inspecting the requests and responses should help you track down where the issue lies.
