random images

How can I create my web page to have an image that loads/changes the picture randomly.

for instance, i have a picture at the center of the site. i want that picture to load a new one every 2-3 seconds or so.

now some sites i've seen do this with special effects, something more like MS power point where you can incorporate fading, etc. such sites i would imagine use flash, though I don't know for sure since i have never usd flash.

what technology should i use to accomplish this? sorry, no java applets.

Just switching the images can be done with JavaScript; see here.

I might be mistaken, but that looks like you need to press the mouse on the image or roll over the image for it to change. i want image to just randomly change every 1-2 seconds without user intervention.

is this still a JS task?

Yes. Check out the window.setInterval() method.

With regards to effects, check out the Scriptaculous Javascript library. You just missed a book promo on this very subject last week.
