Hi all,
I’ll go for "M: SuperSize Me",
Although it will look bit unusual to some people, that what burgers has to do with Java design patterns (In fact there is no relation I believe), and that I believe is the strongest point that is having no direct relation. What a Book Cover does, IMO it is just an advertisement, and when some Java Developer sees a girl offering burgers on the cover page of Java Design Patterns book, he will be prompted to at least pick this book from the shelf and have a look at it, just to find out why this picture is here. And that’s the maximum a cover picture can do, i.e. make prospective buyer pick up the book for a glance, rest depends upon the contents etc
Nice Collection Though

I think that's a pretty amazing idea Warren.. Like the TV Guides, print copies with all 16 covers, (and get the bookstores to stock all of them), and then pick the one you want or collect 'em all

It would be funny to have to specify which cover when ordering online however.

Seriously, the scarcity of the latest HF JSP & Servlets tells me most of us will pick up a copy regardless of who's on the cover, if we can find one!!

I nominate Warren to receive the prize for his terrific idea, I wish I'd have thought of it.

Consider what you are saying, ladies and gentleman.

A: Flower Girl doesn't look as though she has got staying power. Design Patterns just isn't on her mind most times.
B: Has this Fashion , hip-hop thing going , useful if considering an invasion of ... France.
C: Guy saying "Oh" looks like he'll be saying "Oh" for a long while yet.
D: Brunette Black Shirt a very real possibility. Will come back to her.
E: Stripey Blonde looks like she'd rather know a bloke who knows his Patterns.
F: Plaid Guy has a stye in his eye that needs to be looked at BY YOU,he's decided.
G: Curly hair girl has enough problems of her own with that hair.
H: Blue Shirt Arms Crossed another possibility. I remember the time
we were supposed to be develop code in Java but management didn't like us looking at Sun's site. I think we could run into similar problems here.
I: Brunette Maroon Shirt. That bed-head says it all.
J: Black Shirt Guy looks like someone I'd rather have mend my PC.
K: Snowboard Girl will have you yearning for yet another holiday.
L: Pink Shirt Arms Overhead is working out for a stand-in part as Keira Knightley.
M: Supersize Me will have you overweight in no time. Everyone's on a diet.
N: Pigtail Girl is a possibility. She'll get serious when the time is right.
O: Blue Shirt Guy another real poss. He has the right combo of fun and seriousness.
P: Biker Couple. It's weird but they will trigger all the right noises. In these days of traffic jams who doesn't dream of a biker's life with balance, judgment, and good timing. These two'll let the young ones pick a
destination and they'll show the direction.

P O N D H'r your answers in that order !

K: Snowboard Girl.

To: K. Snowboard Girl
From: Gary

Dear Snowboard Girl,

Ever since I saw you that day at Barnes and Noble, I knew there was something different about you. While others called me dummy, or put a time limit of 21 days on me, you just smiled as if to say, "Hey, it's ok. The stuff inside me may be complex, but in the end I'm just an ordinary, cute, and sporty girl. I'm Snowboard Girl." You make me happy.

And Snowboard Girl, I am so coupled to you that I take you everywhere. To work. To school. To the beach. We've even been out to dinner numerous times. Remember the looks on the waiters' face when we insist on a high chair for you. And a full table setting. They don't want us to intermingle, but then they look at you, Snowboard Girl, and they understand.

And remember, Snowboard Girl, when I introduced you to my parents? Were they surprised or what? Yes, their responses took awhile, but I knew your requests would win them over. They just had to leaf through your pages a few times to know.

And sometimes, Snowboard Girl, I feel sorry for the airplane stewardesses who look at us like you've got your business logic in my presentation layer. Or like they've never seen the likes of you, a cute and sporty girl of approximately 700 pages, in your own airplane seat. And the fuss they put up sometimes when we insist on a drink for you! But their motivation always changes when they see the consequences. Gee whiz, Snowboard Girl, some people are just born jealous, I guess.

But in the end, we were meant for each other, Snowboard Girl. You give me knowledge of things I had no idea about. When we talk about MVC people may stare because they don't know what we're talking about. But we know. You and I were meant to be. My context object is nothing without your transfer object. You are the data access object to my business object. The service activator to my service locator. You are .... oh, you know what I mean, Snowboard Girl. Sometimes you bring me to tiers. Thank you.

Persistently yours,
Gary

it's obvious, dear cute Kathy, the choice is everybody because are patterns.
+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
My choice is P: The Biker Couple

The reason is that the couple in the photo reminds of one of those patterns: the decorator pattern -- The outside one holds the inner one on arms, just like one class decorates another.

Remember the figure that demonstrates the decorator pattern in the GoF book? It's exactly the same

I vote for P:Biker Couple.

A pattern is a coupling of different standards and the biker couple represents that.

Each pattern having its own unique strength and weakness which is
represented by the couple.

The guy looks like a strict (Entity Bean) and the gal looks to me like a
scalable stateless session bean.

oops....i find Enterprise objects everywhere..............

Logically speaking, I vote for J: Black Shirt Guy. Design Pattern is definitely a mission critical task and its a kind of mechanism or logical path, how to bring down the conceptual structure to conventional language. Only experienced people can share their technics as to how the good design patterns looks. See this Black Shirt Guy how happy and relaxed hands free pose. He knows the Design Pattern inside technics of HF-DP book, he found the solution for his problem. Study the HF-DP book, you will also feel happy as good as this Black Shirt Guy.
(Certainly, I dont say that you will lose hair if you read it or you have to shave your head before reading, certainly not )

PS: One interesting thing I noticed about HF books cover page logic- a kind of invitation to the readers to pick the book
HF Java : A man raised eyebrow, slightly lifted specs - depicts a microscopic, in-depth view on Java
HF EJB : A man Arms Crossed - Know how to code EJB and watch simply arms crossed what it does for you.

Technically speaking, Id also like to vote for A: Flower Girl. Look at her, she has sound Factory Methods (beautiful, charming, etc.), excellent structural & flashing behavioural attributes and perfectly fits into Model-View-Control Framework. Possibly leading to Readers Most Frequently Referred Page (and others Frequently Visited Page ).
(Straight competition to commercial books-they have to find out some alternate to insert in their cover page, may be wildlife.)

I would go for A: Flower Girl. Because: This book is about Design patterns and all except this girl have simple patterns (stripes or no pattern at all) on their body. The cover should say the mood of the book

I will go for A:flower girl:

Her inviting look will attract people atleast to take the book & have a look inside. Once you bring them that close of looking into the index page, we can be sure that 90% of them will buy one.(Rest 10% should be other field people who just pickedup the book to have a closer look at the covergirl )

That doesn't end here. Even after purchase the cover might mesmerize you to take the book often(sshhh...studytime boss ). The time you loose interest in this cover may take between 1 to 3 months before which you should have completed reading the book more than once(the next HF book should have been relesed by that time with even more attractive cover ).

My choice would be "N igtails Girl". I'm sure that Christopher Alexander, hailing from Vienna, would go for the European look (albeit a bit further north than Austria). She has a pleasant "Facade", and I wouldn't mind her being a "Visitor", although I doubt that she's a "Singleton". I think there is a "Template" used in Scandinavia to produce girls like this as if from a "Factory" (there were probably many "Observers" when the "Prototype" first appeared!). I hope that this line of reasoning is not considered too "Flyweight" ;-)

My choice is A:Flower Girl.

She is simple, clever, discreet, very tempting and attrative. She gives a irresitable virtual invitation to take her people giving a glance at her ( Head First Book Cover).
She represnts a picture of confidence representing a byproduct of state of art design.
On a whole she is the best example of a singleton class.

She has the power of a black hole, attracting the techies to grab the book.

What I love about design patterns is how the objects interact, and even how patterns can interact with other patterns. I choose the picture with two people for this reason.

I also want to show support for those essays that voted for someone based on their clothing having a pattern.

If I was suggesting pictures, I would suggest someone with a crazy pattern shirt.

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away

I was living with my parents, P. Biker Couple, and my annoying sister, G. Curly Hair Girl. At the time, I was an intern in the I.T. Department of a local company. My job was to continually build software for daily operations with the other intern, O. Blue Shirt Guy. Blue and I were young and inexperienced at the time, so the I.T. guy, C. Guy Saying Oh, was always scolding us for buggy programs and extending deadlines. During this period, I heard of this new technology that was becoming increasingly popular called Java. I didnt know much about Java at the time, but I went to my boss, H. Blue Shirt Guy, and asked him if I could learn more about Java. He thought this was a great idea, so he sent me to a Java class at the local college. My teacher, D. Brunette Black Shirt, taught me everything that I needed to know about the fundamentals of Java. One day, while having lunch with my coworkers, I. Brunette Maroon Shirt and L. Pink Shirt Arms Overhead, I mentioned my desire to convert the companys infrastructure to Java. L. Pink got pretty excited and a little crazy, till our server, M. Supersize Me, came with our food. When I got back to the office, I mentioned my idea to my boss H Blue. He said that I should write a proposal and present it to his boss the next day. I spent the entire night working on my proposal. My girlfriend, A. Flower Girl kept complaining that I wasnt spending enough time with her and broke up with me. The next day, I gave my presentation to my bosss boss, J. Black Shirt Guy, and the director of Finances, E. Blonde with Stripes. J. Black loved the idea and convinced E. Blonde to budget more money for the conversion. E. Blonde budgeted money for the conversion and I got a raise. I hired an assistant, F. Plaid Guy, to help me with the project. During the conversion, I decided to take a break and get away. I went skiing in Vail and ran into K. Snowboard Girl. She told me about this book she had modeled for the cover of, Heads Up Servlets and JSP. I bought a copy and put it to use, but soon realized that it was not enough. We were coding and coding, with too much repeated work. Finally, I discovered the answer in these things called design patterns. I read up on patterns and the gang of four, until I mastered the material and put it to use. Now my company is efficient and profitable. I got a new girlfriend, N. Pigtails Girl, who likes to code Java and I have become a Java evangelist at work. Now, they pay me to teach Java and Design Patterns to all the interns and new hires.

Because I let everyone know how useful and cool design patterns are, you should put me, B. Urban Guy, on the Cover of your new book.

Reason: Looks intelligent, not out there on the edge, seems to say "Come on take a look, you can do this!"

These are just impressions

A: Java is certainly not on her mind
B: Would have a difficult time explaining patterns to mere mortals
C: Way too surprised
D: Not convincing
E: My second choice for similar reasons as H
F: Not too bad but looks like he needs just a little more sleep
G: Lots of enthusiasm but not about design patterns
I: Hair is a bit much
J: A little too sure of himself
K: In the zone but doesn't fully understand the subject
L: Bright, energetic, doesn't have the shoes of the serious software person
M: Looser
N: Too dreamy
O: Okay but a bit too rumpled
P: No comment

Ah, the shame of wasting a Java Patterns cover on a fast food server, or just another programmer guy. Lets try a simple test: Stand up and look around the cubicle empire, noting all the developers with lustrously long hair. (comb-overs do not count) Yeah thats what I thought. I mean, implementing an MVC architecture on your IT coworkers may move their business logic into its rightful place but that leaves a presentation layer which is a little (ahem) rough around the edges. Who do you want working beside you for the next six months while you develop interception filters: Joe Average or Flower Girl? (this is a rhetorical question, right?!)

Yeah, shes all sweet and innocent looking-but I cant even mention the places this girl has DAOs tattooed! Shell shrug off the attention from mere mortals, but as soon as she hears you talking about increasing scalability-shell be at your place and implementing stateful session beans all night long! Sure, youll have to interface with her business delegate in order to make things happen, but when you get access to her remote business tier... wow!

Let Flower Girl visit your shop and watch the fun begin. Her composite view will give everyone goose-bumps in anticipation of what they'll see next! Watch as she handles those requests uniformly; men adore her, women want to be her, and everyone will listen to what this sexy service locator has to say. Want instant office admiration from your peers? Just tickle Flower Girls web system broker and shell give you an enticing view of those perky services!

Patterns are pure excitement folks! OUT with a monotone lecture on byte code enhancement given by some random IT scrub. IN with a smashing brunette named Flower Girl teaching you how to expose her ever so sensitive resources. She has a look that says: These are Java Patterns baby, and they're sexy cool! With Flower Girl on the cover everyone will be begging to borrow the book, no-one will be able to put it down, and we'll have some intimate memories of those lovely business objects... ooh yeah!

All this in the name of Java. Its a beautiful thing.

Hello Everybody,

My choice is :

L: Pink Shirt Arms Overhead

The girl wear a dress clothing, she follows a dress code and probably works as a Software Engineer in some respectable company. On the other hand, she stands in informal position crossed arms - she thinks informal and uses Design Patterns.

She just applied some Design Patterns and improved application performance twice. Is she enjoying? Sure. She is doing it for fun. A good programmer always work for fun.

Is she going to do another accidental revolution? I think so.

cheers,
MZ

P.S. Another reason to have the girl on the book cover - because first two Head First books had pictures of guys....
So I left, I came home, and I ate some pie. And then I read this tiny ad:
