Okay this may not be the best way to start this topic but I have some html errors I am getting. It seems that the tags are correct but when it displays in the browser window, I get these weird symbols almost like hieroglyphics. Does anyone know if this could be from cut and pasting text from the web??? It happened to 2 of my students in class who are using Text Edit and Firefox and cut and pasted text from the web (not code)

Thanks

Yes. This could be from copying and pasting. A simple way to remove those weird characters is to paste the text into a text editor like Notepad. Then, copy and paste again from Notepad to your html. At least then, you will know what you're pasting.

You can see this a lot when cutting and pasting "junk characters" from programs such as Word. Make sure that you're not pasting such "special" characters (like the special quotes that Word uses).

Microsoft was 'kind' enough to introduce a propriety character set called cp1252 that includes fancy quotes, emdash, the euro sign and more. The newer versions of notepad recognize these characters, and therefore the old trick of cutting and pasting first to notepad doesn't always work.

Anthony, it would much easier to understand what's going on if you find the original url from which the information was taken.
