display wider than browser window

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
Hi folks,
Most threads fit nicely within my browser's window size (like this one), but some are so wide that scrolling is necessary to read it,
like this one, for example: http://www.javaranch.com/ubb/Forum24/HTML/011198.html
Is this a problem with my browser (Netscape Comm 4.73, 17" monitor) or is something else at work here? Anyone else experiencing this?
Cheers,
Pauline

It isn't your browser or your monitor... it's the UBB software that JavaRanch uses for this board...

I think this happens when a really long line of code is inside a code tag. Normally the text in a post wraps around, but the UBB code tag tells the text not to do this anymore, so formatting of the code remains the same. This means that you can end up with a really long line of code that goes off the edge of the browser. Unfortunatly, it looks like UBB formats all posts on the page to the same width, so any post on the page ends up being as wide as the longest line on the page.

This is something that has been a minor annoyence to me also, and whenever I post code that does this, I usually go back and try to edit some line breaks into my code...

Aha.
Does that mean that there's not much hope that the UBB update will eliminate this? If the code tag fixes the width of the post, seems it wouldn't make much sense to have posts of differing widths in one thread... hmm, or would it?

Hi Pauline,
The guy that posted the long single line inside his code block was causing this. Inside the code blocks in UBB it doesn't word wrap. This causes things to go off the side of the page. I editted it to fix that.
Thanks for bring it to my attention.

Hi Carl,
Thank YOU for fixing it!

Just a thought. Long lines not wrapping may have to do with 'cut and paste' from a Unix vs. DOS file format.
Seems to me some code somewhere should check for that.
