Software Engineering Manager

Job Description

Blue Fish is growing and we are seeking a Software Engineering Manager to help us drive excellence in software development and project delivery. As a software consulting firm that acts like a product development company, we pride ourselves on our ability to produce product-quality consulting solutions. Our projects range from small, two-person development teams to larger, multi-year engagements with team sizes reaching over a dozen people. The Software Engineering Manager will be responsible for building scalable and repeatable software development methodologies and for managing a team of project managers, developers, business analysts, test engineers, and partners that work together to deliver client solutions across all of our practice areas.

At Blue Fish, we have high expectations. We are seeking an accomplished technologist, experienced in architecting enterprise business applications, with a minimum of 10 years experience in the full lifecycle of software development, including at least 5 years managing development of enterprise-class products and solutions. The Software Engineering Manager will be detail oriented, focused on excellence, and be able to think strategically while managing tactical success. The successful candidate will be an excellent manager of both direct reports and virtual teams, and will be familiar with a broad range of organizational functions and industries.

The Software Engineering Manager is accountable for continuously improving our software engineering processes, including requirements gathering, design, construction, quality assurance, deployment, and support. The Software Engineering Manager works closely with our practice managers to ensure that our projects have the personnel and methodologies to be delivered successfully and with an outstanding client experience.

We are looking for that incredibly rare intersection of successful operating history, outstanding people skills, and the necessary small company willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job done. With an exceptional team already in place, wonderful Fortune 500 clients, and a longstanding company commitment to be the best software consulting firm in our space, this is an outstanding opportunity for someone who wants to leverage their expertise to grow a software engineering organization the right way.

This position reports to a Vice President, Operations.

The consultants at Blue Fish have an unusually high level of talent and capability, and the Software Engineering Manager must be able to meet or exceed the existing standard. The successful candidate will "raise the bar" at Blue Fish and will have the following qualifications:
• A history of success in leading, developing, hiring, motivating and mentoring high-performance software development teams
• A thorough understanding of software development practices and modern software technologies
• Proven leadership qualities as a decision maker and business leader who can think strategically and effectively implement new ideas
• Ability to recruit, energize and retain a team of high performance software engineers
• Experience in estimation of engineering efforts, implementation planning, and rollout of project deliverables as well as development of project plans, budgets, and resource requirements
• Experience in managing large, time sensitive, software development projects
• Experience building a scalable software development operation
• Experience with successfully integrating offshore resources into the development process without compromising on quality
• A passion for excellence and a disdain for missed expectations
• A complete commitment to client satisfaction

• Requirements
The ideal candidate must meet the following minimum requirements:
• Proficiency with Object Oriented Programming and UML
• Proficiency with Java, and some familiarity with .NET
• Proficiency with the Microsoft Office productivity tools
• Willingness to occasionally travel when necessary on an inconsistent schedule. It is important to note that our business model calls for the majority of our work to be done locally, at our offices in Austin.
• A bachelors degree from a top-notch university
• Eligibility to work in the United States. We are unable to consider candidates that require visa sponsorship.

• The Company
Blue Fish Development Group is a small, high-caliber team of software developers and consultants creating technology solutions for some of the most successful companies in the world. We are a flexible, results-oriented organization full of smart, energetic people with a passion for excellence. Our culture is open and fun, and we value an appreciation of life outside work. We are ruthless in our pursuit of client satisfaction. In 2007, Blue Fish was selected as one of the best places to work in Central Texas by the Austin Business Journal.

Blue Fish is located in fabulous Austin, Texas and serves clients nationwide.
