For what, why, where and when EJB?

Dear members,
How can we suggest EJB with XML architecture to a particular type of server model.
How it is distinct from MS DCOM with ASP apart from platform independency?
Would the EJB model run slow due to JVM comes a s a middle layer between your process and the OS?
I have more doubts, but at present these are vital ones.
Please do answer them respectively with sufficient explanation.
