I found a little reference book - XML Pocket Reference by Robert Eckstein to be very helpful.
You should download either the JAXP parser from java.sun.com or the Xerces parser from http://xml.apache.org/
and play around with the demos.
<shameless-plug>Or you could wait till my Java Developer's guide to XML and eCommerce comes out in mid January.</shameless-plug>

There are dozens of websites that teaches basic to advanced level XML concepts, but not many of the deal with integrating XML with Java.
If you're new to XML itself, checkout the following links -
www.xmlresources.com
www.xml101.com
http://java.sun.com/xml/faq.html
http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/xml/index.html
http://java.sun.com/xml/docs/tutorial/index.html
http://www-4.ibm.com/software/developer/education/xmljava/
http://www.projectcool.com/developer/xmlz/xmlzquick/index.html
I hope that's enough to keep you busy for a while
