For a start, you could download the JAXP parser from java.sun.com and study the documentation for the org.w3c.dom package.

Pick up the O'Reilly book "Java and XML" by Brett McLaughlin. It contains a good chapter on DOM and how to use the JAVA to parse an XML document to DOM. He also maintains a site at www.jdom.org.
Also see, http://www.w3schools.com/xml/.
Good luck,
