regarding xml and .gif

Hi folks,
I would like to know what is the real use of XML besides storing the data in xmlfiles and use it as a data island.what bout indexing issue coz for searching the data u need index how to search conditional(let's say avg of some amt)data which may be stored in diff.files and suppose on diff servers.how to store gif images,in xml,how to retrieve them???.

One fine use: input for ant has to be an xml file (the platform independent
"make", because ant is build with Java)

A lot of software vendors are moving towards XML files to specify configuration information. EJB deployment descriptors are going to be( or is it already? ) XML documents. Servlet configuration is already in XML format.
XML is a data representation format and is not a media for data persistence. XML is not designed to replace relational or object databases. Let's not search for reasons why, since XML itself was not conceived for that purpose in the first place!
