Does anyone know if there is any difference in performance when requesting query results in XML as opposed to recordsets? It seems pretty fast to me.

It is quite fast. Since XML is text-based, I don't think there will be a noticeable latency. The query engine/processor is just formatting the resultset as an XML. But this feature isn't free -you will notice some overhead especially when you're dealing with very large result sets.
