I've just finished it, but I wouldn't say that "it is a good book for starting to learn XML". It provides in-depth explanations of SAX, DOM, JDOM, JAXP as well as other stuff.
The author wrote in the "Who should read this book?" section:

I do not assume that you know anything about XML, and start with the basics. However, I do assume that you are willing to work hard and learn quickly; for this reason we move rapidly through the basics so that the bulk of the book can deal with advanced concept.

So I think that is self-explanatory...
XML in a nutshell (O'Reilly) was good one but you may also want to read some reviews at http://www.javaranch.com/books.jsp
