Create XML DOM with schema

Using xerces 2.0.1 and the W3C DOM API, I'm generating an XML DOM tree. I would like to set attriubtes on the root element to specify a schema to be used later for validation during parsing. Here is a fragment of the latest code that I've tried:

        doc = new DocumentImpl();
        root = doc.createElement("extract");
        root.setAttribute("xmlns", "http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance");
        root.setAttributeNS("http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance",
                            "xsi:schemaLocation",
                            "file:///C:/projects/dss/extractor/docs/extract.xsd");

Also, here is the relevant fragment of output from my JUnit TestCase:

I would appreciate very much any help you could offer to allow me to move forward.
