I work with Geographic Information Systems, which often use databases to store "spatial" information. Other data in a GIS is often stored in an XML format like GML, and I have heard of XML databases. What exactly is an XML database? What are the advantages of storing this type of information in an XML database? Are XML databases the future trend in database programming? Is their any open-source XML & Java databases you would recommend?
Thanks,
Landon

One feature of XML databases seems to be that they can execute queries based on the structure of the XML data (using XPath and/or XQuery).
An open source implementation can be found at http://exist.sourceforge.net/

I'm going to move this post to our XML forum where they may have additional ideas.
