how is agile software developmental process different from its contemporaries like RUP

RUP is just a process *framework* - you can create an agile instance of it (some will argue that XP is one).

XP is an agile development process, so there is no difference.

XP is one member of Agile process(the best known member). Read Martin Fowler's overview article. Here are two good links:
