Is this geared towards passing the PMP exam? Or can simple software developers like us also benefit from this book?

Thanks!

I looked at the abstract and TOC. Looks like a hard core book on PMP for the exam.

If you want one for practical PM processes look at Fundamentals of Project Management by James Lewis (3rd edition is current if I am not mistaken)

Thanks Conrad! But is it easy to understand as the books from the Head First series?

Project Management is unchartered territory for me, so I think it would be best for me to bet on books which are "brain friendly".

Paul,

I started studying PM in the old Kepner-Tregoe methodology in 1994. I recently got PMP certified. Any PMP material will make your head spin If it doesn't then it is not worth it's salt

Jokes aside, the PMBOK and PMP certification is sufficiently complex to help ground Project Managers and Project leaders in a standard. I also teach PMP processes to Business Analysts.

Check out the Lewis book at your local public library will give you a feel for whether it is the right book for you. It is well laid out.

I agree with you Conrad. I've seen Rita Mulcahy's study guide on PMP and it really made my head spin!

I'm hoping that the HF PMP book would be a totally different STORY. (pun intended)

I studied with James Lewis (in person) and have great respect for him. However, the book on which the PMP Exam is bases, A Guide to the Project Manager's Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) has changed since Dr. Lewis wrote his Fundamentals book.

There are many new things that are different and would lead you to make errors on the PMP Exam.

The Head First PMP book, followed by a thorough examination of the PMBOK may be your best bet.

Many local Project Management Institute Chapters have low cost review sessions for you after you have read these books and done some studying on your own. Check out a local chapter (they have them internationally) at pmi.org.

Hi Paul,

The book is geared toward passing the PMP exam. It's a PMP prep guide, pure and simple. But a lot of software developers have taken the plunge into project management and decided to go ahead and get certified. If that's something you're interested in doing, then the book is for you.

Hope this helps,

Yes it looks interesting.

Would this book also be applicable to CAPM?

Thanks Jenny!

No need to answer my latest post as a new thread has already been created by other ranchers regarding CAPM.

Bonus question: Does it come with a 45 day free safari access?

We all know that HF books are not that easy to carry around.
