Has anyone run into small glitches with Windows 2000 yet? SP2, with all other relevant updates, as purported to be current on the windows update site.

(expects a torrent)...

What I mean is... stupid stuff like: Right click in IE 5.5, select View Source.... and nothing happens.

Or right clicking a picture, I can only save as a BMP file, and not whatever format the picture *actually* is. Pictures of geese and puppies, you filthy minded gits!

Or.. my desktop, when I right-click and change my wallpaper... in the dialog box, it won't show the JPG (yes, yes, I shouldn't use them), but ActiveDesktop is on, and it shows up on the real desktop.. just not in the little preview thingy.

By far, I haven't been this happy with a Windows version since 98. (ME was a catastrophe, any way you looked at it - I don't think my box shut down successfuly once in 3 months, and it was OEM!)

But these teensy glitchies are starting to annoy me. Especially the view source thing, being a web-type-developer.

I use a basic Win2K for lots of my web development and have never seen things like you describe. Admittedly, I haven't added SP2 yet, and only run IE 5.0.
I assume you are aware that IE calls out to your selected default text editor when you "view source". If that is still Notepad (and you have ever been hit by one of those notepad.exe viruses) then you may have all sorts of problems. Try setting IE to use a different editor/viewer by default, and see if it makes a difference. I use TextPad, if it helps.

I had a similar problem not being able to view HTML source with IE 5.0 on Windows. At first I thought it had to do with some sort of interference with Orion, but it turned out to be a massive buildup of cache files. Or, at least, deleting cache files has made the problem go away.

I am current on updates, using IE5.5 on Win2K and have not experienced these problems.

I just now tried right-clicking/view source a page -> no problem. Right-clicking a picture gave me the option of *.gif or *.bmp (I didn't try it on a *.jpg yet). I also haven't changed my wallpaper using your method.

Makes me wonder if there's something in your setup that's causing problems.

I cannot BELIEVE that was the problem. Cache files...

My 950MHz PC had my hard drive thrashing for over 2 minutes. And voila, problem fixed.

What an insane bug.

Interesting (?expected) note: When you go Tools|Internet Options|Programs and select Textpad as the default HTML editor, it still uses Notepad.exe for the 'view source'.

So how would I set my 'default text editor' to be textpad? reassign *.txt to that program?

And here's something I never thought of (because I hide that button with my links bar)... there is an "edit" button on the toolbar, and clicking this *does* bring up Textpad. I wonder if I could have used this button, whilst I still had too many cache files.

I suppose I'm happy it's fixed. Thanks for the help.

Now all I gotta do is figure out how to save my pictures of ducks and puppies (or was that geese?)

Cool. I guess I don't see the problem, because I routinely clean all my cache files in all my browsers every day or two. I hate the niggle of wondering if I'm looking at an out of date version of something.

Well, this working for two of us now escalates it from being an anecdote to data, right?
Johannes -- you getting all this. Didn't you promise to document this somewhere?

The "edit" button will bring up the application you've specified in "Tools", "Internet Options", "Programs", "HTML editor"

JdJ --
Follow the link "massive buildup of cache files" from my post above and look at the last post in that thread.

Right. That was before your promotion to General. (Since you're the General (General Computing, that is), and I'm just a lowly scrub, shouldn't it be me addressing you as "sir"?)
