My Windows 2000 machine has suddenly gone crazy. Immediately after if has finished booting, it starts rebooting. The only way I can stop it from doing this is by starting up in safe mode. I can't figure out what the problem is and now I'm thinking that maybe I need to re-install Windows, which is something I hate to do because it takes at least a day to get everything back to the way it was. I realize I'm not giving much information here (because I don't know what the heck is going on) but does anyone have any idea of how to fix this without re-installing?
Also, last time I installed Windows I upgraded from 98 to 2000 and got this f*@%ing dual boot which I didn't want. Now, if I do have to re-install after all, and I decide to upgrade to XP while I'm at it, will I get triple boot ?
I really hate the way Windows does all these "smart" things it thinks you want, like creating a dual boot you never asked for. Maybe I should just switch to Linux, but I'm afraid I'm not enough of an expert to get it installed properly.
What do the experts among you recommend?

There used to be a repair option in Windows OS Installers. Not sure is it there for Windows 2000 or not, but its worth a try.

This should be moved to the general computing forum.

I had the same 'symptom' a year ago. It turned out to be the processor fan was not working. The processor would soon over-heat and the pc would reboot. Check if you have a fan problem..

On Installing Xp, you will get 2 options:
1. Upgrade your windows and
2. New Installation.
I beleive option 2 will replace your existing windows with the new one BUT YOU MAY LOSE YOUR DATA. However when I chose option 2, it did not delete my data..but don't count on that!!!
Anyway if you have multiple boot options and you want to remove any of them: Boot using the OS you want to remove, and use Control Panel to "Unistall Windows"..
Good Luck..

I tried the repair option but that didn't work. Finally reformatted the hard drive and tried to install XP but the cd I had was an uhm, well <blushing> illegal copy </blushing> and something was wrong with it. I refuse, however to pay for Microsoft products since they are evil and expensive and I think that Bill is quite rich enough.
So then I thought: why am still stuck with Windows anyway? And this morning I ordered Red Hat Linux 8.0. An important step in my life as a geek. Can't wait till it gets here! Will let you know what it's like.
I didn't look at the fan yet. I'm hoping that Linux will solve all my problems...

Good luck with RedHat. Getting it going is not easy as Windows though!
Sad part of all is, to install RedHat properly, you need a running Windows version - to search the net and find solutions for those hundreds of installation issues like drivers, your PC manufacturers documentation, documentation for every not-so-common component you have in your machine, configuration commands, tips, tricks, work arounds,... etc!

So if you think the price of an automobile is too much it is all right to steal it too?

Nope, but only if that particular automobile company makes a model X by copying features from all other hardworking manufactures (with out their permission, of course) and gave it away for free for 10 years, giving away for free rides for another 5 years in other parts of the world, undercutting the entire market, dominating the whole sector and then over night defining a new ?eXtremePerformance? fuel and asking every one to use only that fuel which is entirely over priced and incompatible with the other barely surviving models in the market! That is when we steal it!

It is tempting to say that if I steal a car, someone else is no longer able to use it, whereas I can download software without actually taking it from someone. However, that doesn't make it right, I know, and I am generally a law-abiding citizen.
I do agree with Ashok that the way Microsoft is trying to rule the world is very annoying. Still, I supposes that doesn't make it right to steal their software. Let's just say it makes it understandable .
But I would like to point out that I have mended my ways. It would have been easy enough to get another illegal copy of XP, since practically everybody I know seems to have one. But I guess that if I'm whining about Microsoft all the time, I should be "brave" enough to switch to another OS.
Having said that, a Windows home edition costs almost twice as much as a commercial Linux distribution and I simply can't see why. I have used Windows (legal versions too!) for several years and I must say that it has caused me a great deal of frustration by just conking out for no apparent reason while you have no way of knowing what's going on and therefore no way to fix it.
Of course, I have yet to see if Linux does any better but I'm willing to take my chances. If we (professional computer users) don't use alternatives for Windows no one else will, and we really have no right to complain about Microsoft, which is a right I'd hate to lose .

MS decided to crack down with XP. you cant even reinstall it on the same computer without getting permission.

This will be enforced by Microsoft's "product activation" system, which requires you to let Microsoft create and store a profile of every computer on which you install windows XP. If you dont allow them to do this, your copy of windows will stop working after 30 days. It might also stop working any time you make significant changes to your PC's hardware configuration.. In addition, if you try to install your copy of XP on another machine, you will be asked to activate again-and since it probably wont be allowed, youll need to purchase an additional copy. Finally, if your PC malfunctions and you have to reinstall XP, you'll need to contact Microsoft and explain the situation.

as far as im concerned they can keep it. im still not comfortable with the raw sockets issue. i can live with the blue screen of death i get in win98 once in a while.
i have a P1 133mhz so it is about time to upgrade, i would like to drop my 10gig maxtor in and copy it to the new HD like i copied my 1.3gig to it when i put it in. can you even buy a computer nowadays without having it bundled with an OS???
im thinking i will have to put it together myself.
