my book says they use phase-change technology like CD-RW, but it doesnt say they can write to them, so i would think the answer is no. i have also seeen systems advertized that come with both a CD-RW and a DVD-ROM drive. i guess if you can rewrite a DVD disk which holds a lot more than a CD disk you might concider getting the DVD-RW anyway, it holds 4.7 gigs. there are also DVD-Ram disks which holds 2.6G or 5.2G(doublesided), and DVD+RW disks which holds 2.8G/side
