Who gave you that message?
There's some unscrupulous marketeers around using scaretactics by means of popup ads on webpages saying just that...

Download AdAware from http://www.lavasoft.de and run that. It should get most of it.
Also read http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html and try the tools available there (the site is often slow or overloaded, I guess some spyware authors are working a massive attack against it).
If you can't reach the site from the infested computer, download the removal tools from another computer instead (some of the worst crap out there now prevents access to sites with means to remove it).

Bad Luck! I was running anti-spyware removal program on my laptop(which was infected). All of sudden, my laptop got started shutting down 3 to 4 times. Finally, I couldn't even turn on my laptop. I called compaq and we troubleshoot(over the phone) it, but still it's not turning on. I took my laptop to service center, he told me that either my hard drive damaged or operating system. Unfortunately, I didn't back up data. I asked him how much it will cost to recover data. He said $400-800. I can't effort that cost. I don't how can I recover my data from my laptop(which we even can't turn it on)....

Please help me out,

Thanks,
Angela

That was not a dialog box most likely. It was a pop up ad trying to convince you to use their software. I tried to find it to get a screenshot but failed to find it.

Download the google toolbar and you will not have to worry about pop up windows...

Google's toolbar (and others, I use Vivisimo toolbar instead which doesn't install its own spyware like Google does and is IMO a better search engine overall with far more relevant results) have functionality to block popups on websites.

FYI - I don't know of any spyware/adware that actually damages your harddrive. In fact, I know of very few viruses these days that do that. Most are more annoying than anything and will slow your system down to a halt. But this does not keep them from turning on nor does it do any physical damage.

I would venture to guess that your HD was about to go bad anyway and it was just by coincidence that it happened at the time that it did.

You could try to insert your HD into another laptop and see if you can boot. It's kind of a long shot, though...

Then again, I know there are some companies out there who specialize in salvaging data from damaged harddrives (I've seen pictures of pretty darn blown up harddisks from which they claim they managed to save 99% of the data...) but their services can easily cost several hundred bucks which may or may not be an issue.
