Ok... so I am thinking of installing Linux on my home desktop (my main development computer). So I went out to the Redhat web site and I discovered that you can no longer get it for free. Basically they have an enterprise edition now and a new project called Fedora, which has been turned over to the open source development community. They say that Redhat is still contributing to it though. But they also say that it is not for mission critical applications, so that statement does not instill a lot of confidence with me in the stability of the OS.

Then I ran across Linspire, which I believe was once called Lindows. It looks pretty interesting. They have a developer's edition which I guess has lots of developer tools with it for only $59.00

I was just wondering if anyone has ever used it and what kind of experiences have you had with it.

If you're just interested in trying out Linux, you might consider downloading Knoppix -- a bootable read-only CD distribution. Burn it onto a CD, boot the CD, and have fun.

If you're interested in a friendly, free distribution, try Mandrake Linux.

If you're interested in a manly, yet free distro, try Debian or Gentoo Linux.

But Fedora is perfectly lovely. THe main difference between Fedora and the old Red Hat Linux is that people used to think that they got free support with the free download, which was never true.

All of these are easily Googleable.

Yes I know about these other distributions. I was more interested if anyone here at JavaRanch has used Linspire (specifically) and would like to share their opinions of it. I want to do more than to just toy around with Linux, as I am already pretty comfortable with Linux in general.
