Event Calendar or Scheduling Program

I don't carry a PDA because if I am not on the computer I don't care about anything else. But I need a way to keep some sort of Calendar or schedule of events and what not. What I don't want to use is Outlook or any other full blown email/calendar application as I use GMail on the web.

I thought about installing some sort of Calendar program on my webserver but it would have to be PHP and I haven't been able to find anything that I like and is free.

I wouldn't mind having a small application (no I don't want to write it) that runs but it needs a pretty small footprint so I can run it all the time and be notified of things.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd really prefer something web based that will send out email notifications if possible.

Is calendar.yahoo.com also a no-no?

I thought about that but I'd rather not commit myself to something like yahoo, msn, etc. Chances are they start charging at some point in time or something. The only one similar I'd commit to would be google but they don't offer anything like what I am looking for.

I am testing out Mozilla Sunbird right now. Not bad, but would rather have a webapp.

I also played around with Sunbird for a while. While it is a good start, I feel it needs time to mature. If Outlook were an option for you, I would have suggested using Plaxo.

I struggled with the same problem for a while and this is the solution I have come to. I use my office Outlook with plaxo for 95% of my calendaring needs. Plaxo allows me web-based access and Outlook provides me with a highly usable desktop client. For the 5% items that are highly personal and which I would not put in my office systems, I use Yahoo Calendar. So far it has been working for me.

With due respect, perhaps you give Google too much weightage over Yahoo. Yahoo has a heapload of connected, personal information for millions of people and, so far, they have done an admirable job of protecting it and continuing to provide quality, free services.

Given the rate at which Google has been doing betas, perhaps if we were to wait just a bit we would see Google Calendar on the scene!! Here is some more Google musing.

Do post what you come up with, it would be very interesting to know of a better/alternative solution.

I use sunbird + iphpcalendar (from sourceforge). Although iphpcalendar is read-only, WebDAV is a pretty good way of keeping everything in sync across multiple machines.

You know, mac-laptop running ical / windows desktop sunbird. iphpcalendar when you're on the road and need to know what you're doing next.

iPhpCal doesn't help you with "email" notifications and the like, but I'm sure there's one around that can parse iCal entries.
