Has the ranch ever considered setting up a Java Ranch irc channel? I say irc as opposed to a simple chat room because it is more powerful and more stable, plus there are IRC chat clients that can even be run from a website if somebody didn't want to figure out how to use mIRC or something similar.
Just a suggestion.

Not sure we will ever go that way Jason. Our fearless leader aint a big fan of the "chat scene".

WE have had this talk before. The problem is that most of us do not have the TIME for a chat room. I personally do most of my posting in 5 minute segment scattered throughout the day. That would make for a very choppy chat.
Also any effort put into the Chat room is lost to posterity. When you post, folks can search and read it months later. Our lurker percentage is VERY high compared to those who actually post.

I think it's more about the immediate exchange of ideas and a more intimate sense of community. The forums have built a great community, with people kind of lurking around there all through the day. The IRC channel would simply be an extension to, but definitely not a replacement for the forums. They pretty much run themselves, and all your bartenders and above could be given channel ops for when they happen to be on. I have helped with a site that had both an IRC channel and forums and both were fairly active.
Again, just a suggestion.

A former co-worker always goes on about how great the Yahoo programmer chat rooms were. But whenever I show up it is a bunch of 13 year olds going on about anything but programming.
Can anyone recommand a programming chat room that is actually any good, thanks.
