using anti-virus with firewall

Hi,
I need a small clarification regarding the usage of firewall.

I have recently taken a new broadband internet connection. While configuring my machine, the computer technician enabled the Win XP firewall but did not install any anti-virus software.

He told me that since firewall is enabled, there is no need for any anti-virus software on my PC. he advised me not to install any anti-virus software.
I want to know if he is right??

If yes, then how can i check if the contents of a CD or email attachments or files copied from a floppy, CD etc are free of viruses without using an anti-virus software??

Install:

Firefox
AVG - free Antivirus software
Microsoft Windows Defender - free Antispyware
Adaware Personal - free Antispyware

Do your web browsing with Firefox, have Windows XP Firewall running, perform regular virus/spyware scans of your PC, don't run/install email attachments.

Ideally go out and purchase yourself a router and use that as your gateway to your broadband connection rather that directly having your PC connected.

Also, take a look at spyblaster. It will ban a whole ton of web sites, and activeX controls, from IE and Firefox.
