executing a command in perl

Hi all,
I need ur valuable suggestion in executing how a command stored in a variable like consider

 $c="date"; #this is the cmd stored in a variable.
 $c or "$c" or `$c`; #These are the ways i executed the command

but i couldn't be able to execute it.Please tell me the way to execute the command stored in a variable.
