For WSAD, at least 512mb ram. For RAD, at least 1 gig ram.

i have wsad, lotus notes, at lots of personal software, fits in 40gig hdisk

i have 1.4ghz but they say this is too jurassic, buy at least 2gighz, but i am on a budget and 1.4ghz works

Starter, meaning just run j2se? like preparing for scjp?

Yeah, for now, that will do. As you will use like, notepad, or lightweight java developer tools.

Those I mentioned were based on my j2ee usage.

I have used celeron with j2ee/wsad. it is ok. i am not sure if you go to RAD/was6 server, a new j2ee tool version.

it should not be a problem. you can try. but important is cpu speed and ram, i think.

All I can say is that you better not be paying more than, say, $100 US for this machine.

I'm going to move this to "General Computing", as it's utterly off-topic here.

I think I have the exact same dell!

On my website, www.scja.com, I have a number of Java tutorials on how to create a Java file, compile it, and run it using javac. All of those tutorials were done on a Dell Latitude laptop with 256 megs of ram, and a 1.6Ghz processor. You can look at the tutorials and see that the performance is fast with just the SDK.

I will also be installing Eclipse and doing some more Java tutorials.

Now, eventually I will be installing Tomcat and doing some simple Servlet and JSPs. At that point, the 256 megs will definitely become too small.

Max out the memory on that machine - I think the max is 512, and don't install too many other programs on your OS - that'll bog it down in a hurry. But, I've got proof that you can get SCJA and SCJP certified with that little laptop alone!

Cheers!

You can get a lot more cert with that baby

I just changed pc as I needed 1gig ram for RAD. Otherwise, the old pc with max 512mb should do.

So if upgradeability of ram is an issue, you should also look at the motherboard's maximum ram. Mine is 2gig. Most likely, yours is 512mb; you can check.
