My sisters computer is a doorstop. I tried booting the bare mobo and CPU and didnt get a POST. Tried swapping out the power supply, same thing.
I tried putting the hard drive in my computer and got a Win2k blue screen indicating that the boot drive was unreachable.
If I make it slave to my own Win2k system it doesnt get assigned a drive letter, so the data, 2 years worth of precious baby pictures, are unreachable.
Has anyone used a data recovery service?

I have not. But I knew someone who used to work at Ontrack, and my understanding is that they are quite good.

Just browsing around, it appears that data recovery of a typical hard drive is going to run around ~$500. Just a reminder that backing up is cheap!

In other news, Knoppix saves the day!
I booted my Win2k system with it and even though it had a bunch of read errors on the damaged hard drive, it was able to mount the partition with little Max's photos.

With a little knowledge, a cast iron skillet is non-stick and lasts a lifetime.
