I just bought a notebook computer with Windows XP Media Center Edition, upgradable to Windows Vista freely (I only have to pay about $30 for shipping cost). Should I spend the 30 dollars and get the Vista?

Get the disk ... do not install it until Vista has been around a few months, read forums and see what other people's experience is and IF you don't think there are any major problems you can't live with ... give it a shot. I believe you can always roll back an upgrade anyway

I should add. Vista scares the heck out of me.... it looks so ... DIFFERENT! I'm still struggling to come to terms with the change in IE7, what I've seen of Vista I feel like i'm going to have to learn how to use a computer all over again.

What's worse, my parent's computer died last week and they'll be getting a new one in a month or two, and I'm going to bet it has Vista... it took MONTHS to get them used to Win 98 (I know!!) Vista is going to look like a very scary whole new world to them ... sigh!

It'll probably be fine, I just resist change

I am planning to shift to ubuntu or mandrake. Probably the latter. Windows would be for games and linux for the serious stuff

My only problem is that I have to go hunt for a router and have it configured

The advice to "get the disk but don't upgrade just yet" is a good one.

As the TCP stack has been pretty much re-written, if you have an "irregular" application that uses the network, it could hang the computer (not quite a BSOD, but may as well be seeing as we had to hard reset the machines.

Trillian (as of Nov) was causing this behaviour. It might not have been trillian, but the problems went away after we removed it.

This wasn't a beta or RC build version of Vista.

Your mileage will obviously vary depending on what applications you use.

Thanks for the advice "get the disk but don't upgrade just yet". That's also what is on my mind. I remember when Windows XP was released. It was very unstable. I only started to use XP about a year later.

Unless the offer to get Vista for shipping cost only expires, I wouldn't even get the disk yet. There is bound to be a service pack soon. You might as well wait and see if the disk you get at a later date already as the SP applied. One less thing to worry about after the install.
