Hi,

I am not sure if it's in correct forum.

Anyway, I am told to build a discussion board application something like Javaranch.

I want to figure out what features you might want it (or any such applications) to have.

Some features I can think of are:

1. User can post the comments, reply to the other's comments/reply.
2. User can rate the comments/reply.
3. The rating will affect the score of the user.
4. Depending on rating, we can promote the users to higher roles.
5. If user becomes moderator (if they scored enough points) they can moderate other's comments/reply.
6. User can filter the comments. The filter will work on user's rating only.
7. Spam filtering (user will require to enter some code before posting).
8. A user can't post same comments (though I can only do string matching). But he/she can post same reply for two different comments.

(All curtsy to slashdot.org)

Please suggest me if you can think of some cool feature that can be provided...

Thanks.

How about "watch this topic" kind of functionality that was recently implemented in JavaRanch

what about a mini chat feature .

Consider you have an open post and discussion is going on .Then it would be better that both the people start chatting as both are online.Off course if they wish to. There should be one more facility to store the chat in the end of the post.So that other people can also be benefited from this.
How to moderate this ? Many people might misuse this.

Quite interesting but tough to moderate, as you said.

1. User can post the comments, reply to the other's comments/reply.

How about users having the option of reporting a message to the moderator .
If a message is found to be breaking any rules , the users will be able to draw moderator's attention to it.

Will save a lot of efforts for the moderator
